Solunska Glava (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Solunska Glava, standing at 2,540 meters, is the highest peak of the Jakupica massif in central North Macedonia. Its name translates to 'The Head of Thessaloniki,' as it is said that on clear days one can see as far as the Aegean coastal city in Greece from its summit. The mountain's topography is characterized by rugged limestone cliffs, vast alpine plateaus, and deep karst caves that attract both mountaineers and scientists alike. At the summit, there is a major military and civil communication station, which is visible from afar and makes the mountain a prominent landmark. Climbing Solunska Glava is considered one of the most challenging hikes in Macedonia, especially the ascent from the Ceples mountain hut through dense beech forests. The flora and fauna of the area are highly specialized, featuring endemic plant species that occur only in the high elevations of the Jakupica mountains.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Expeditions to this massive, towering summit typically initiate from the remote Cheples mountain hut, demanding very extensive prior planning and a mandatory departure at first dawn.
📅
Best season
Absolute high summer (July and August) is essentially the only strictly advisable window, as dangerously deep snow completely blocks the highly exposed high-altitude trails during all other months.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect grueling, steep ascents over extremely loose scree and highly exposed, narrow alpine ridges that make absolute focus and significant prior mountaineering experience completely essential.
🎒
What to bring
Strictly professional-grade alpine footwear, completely windproof outer layers, reliable emergency communication devices, and abundant high-energy rations are absolutely critical for safety here.
🅿️
Parking
True base-camp parking is generally found miles away at lower mountain villages, from where visitors must either hike strenuously or arrange specialized off-road transport to reach the lower huts.
⚠️
Safety
Sudden, unforgivingly violent storms are incredibly common at this massive altitude; never attempt the peak in overcast conditions or without an experienced partner and registering your exact route.
⏱️
Time needed
Conquering this truly formidable peak and returning safely is a grueling multi-day commitment, very often requiring at least one or two overnight stays at a mountain hut before the final push.
