Church of Saint Nicholas - Štip (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Štip is the cathedral of the Bregalnica Diocese and a prominent example of Macedonian Renaissance sacred architecture. Built in 1867 on the foundations of an older church, it is the work of the famous master builder Andreja Damjanov. The building is designed as a three-aisled basilica of imposing size, characterized by its richly decorated western facade and surrounding galleries. The interior contains valuable icons and wall paintings created by significant masters of the Samokov and Debar schools. Particularly noteworthy is the elaborately carved iconostasis, considered a masterpiece of woodcarving. During the Ottoman era, the church served not only as a religious center but also as an important site for preserving Slavic identity and education. Today, part of the church houses a gallery with a collection of icons, old manuscripts, and ecclesiastical items from the 18th and 19th centuries, making it a major cultural attraction.
