Bylazora (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Bylazora was the largest and most significant city of the Paeonians, an ancient people who inhabited the territory of modern-day North Macedonia. The archaeological site is situated on the Knežje hill near Sveti Nikole, overlooking the strategically vital Ovče Pole plain. During the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, it served as the residence of Paeonian kings before falling under Macedonian control. Excavations have revealed monumental defensive walls, a magnificent royal palace with Doric columns, and sophisticated drainage systems. The city was a crucial hub on the trade and military routes connecting the northern territories with the Aegean Sea. In 217 BC, Philip V of Macedon significantly expanded the fortress to secure the northern border against Dardanian raids. Today, Bylazora stands as one of the most important pre-Roman urban centers in the Balkans, providing deep insights into Paeonian culture and architecture.
