Stone Bridge (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Stone Bridge in Skopje is an iconic symbol of the city, connecting the modern Macedonia Square with the historic Old Bazaar over the Vardar River. The current structure was built in the 15th century under the patronage of Sultan Mehmed II, on the foundations of an older Roman bridge. It is composed of massive stone blocks and features 12 semicircular arches, with a total length of approximately 214 meters. Throughout the centuries, the bridge has been the site of numerous historical events, including public executions during the Ottoman era. Despite severe damage from wars and natural disasters, such as the 1963 earthquake, it has been faithfully restored multiple times. The bridge now serves exclusively as a pedestrian walkway and has a scenic view of the architectural monuments along the riverbank. It remains a central element in the coat of arms of the city of Skopje and an indispensable part of its cultural identity.
