Old Bazaar (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Old Bazaar in Skopje is one of the oldest and largest marketplaces in the Balkans, serving as the city's center for trade and commerce since at least the 12th century. It reached its peak during the Ottoman era, when hundreds of shops, mosques, caravanserais, and hammams were constructed. The architectural landscape is dominated by Ottoman design, though Byzantine influences remain visible in several structures. Notable landmarks within the bazaar include the Suli An, Kapan An, and the Kuršumli An caravanserais, which once housed traveling merchants. Despite damage from earthquakes in 1555 and 1963, the bazaar has preserved its authentic atmosphere with narrow cobblestone streets and traditional craft shops. Today, it remains a bustling cultural hub where visitors can explore goldsmiths, leatherworkers, and traditional restaurants. Its historical significance is further emphasized by the presence of the Museum of Macedonia and the Gallery of Modern Art nearby.
