💡 Tips
- Kaesong is the only major city in North Korea whose historic center wasn't destroyed in the Korean War; admire the traditional Hanok houses.
- A visit to the nearby DMZ (Panmunjom) requires strict adherence to dress codes-no jeans, sandals, or casual t-shirts.
- Listen carefully to the military guides at the DMZ and never point or gesture towards the South Korean side.
- You can buy famous Kaesong Koryo Ginseng here, which makes an excellent, authentic souvenir.
- Electricity and hot water in traditional hotel stays can be intermittent; be prepared for rustic conditions.

Kaesong, the former capital of the medieval Koryo kingdom, is a city of immense historical importance. Unlike most other North Korean cities, it was not destroyed in the Korean War, so its original architecture and historical heritage have been largely preserved. The 'Historic Monuments and Sites in Kaesong' were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013. The city is located just a few kilometers north of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and, until 2016, was the scene of a unique inter-Korean cooperation project: the Kaesong Industrial Region, where South Korean companies employed North Korean workers. Although this project was halted for political reasons, Kaesong remains a symbol of hope for reunification. The city is also famous for its high-quality ginseng and its traditional cuisine.
