Holterberg (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Holterberg is a 59.5-meter high hill in the province of Overijssel and forms the southern part of the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. This glacial push moraine was formed about 150,000 years ago and provides a diverse landscape of dense coniferous forests and vast heathlands. Historically, the Holterberg is best known for the Canadian War Cemetery, where 1,394 soldiers are buried who fell during the liberation of the Netherlands in World War II. Ecologically, the area is of great importance as it is the only location in the Netherlands that hosts a small population of the rare Black Grouse. To protect this population, large sections of the heath have been restored, and visitor paths are carefully managed. The Holterberg Nature Museum provides information about local flora and fauna and is a popular destination for families and school groups. From various viewpoints, one has an extensive view over the flat landscape of Overijssel, making the hill a prominent landmark. Numerous marked routes invite hiking, mountain biking, and cycling through the hilly nature.
