Sallandse Heuvelrug (Netherlands)

Weather…

Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park, situated in the province of Overijssel, is a striking terminal moraine landscape formed by massive glaciers during the Saale glaciation approximately 150,000 years ago. This hilly terrain rises significantly above the surrounding flat Dutch countryside, with the Holterberg reaching a height of 59.5 metres. The landscape is characterized by expansive heathlands and dense forests, providing a crucial ecological corridor for various species. Most notably, the park is home to the last viable population of black grouse in the Netherlands, a species whose survival depends on the careful management of the dry heath habitat. The sandy soils and varying elevations support a diverse range of flora and offer panoramic views that are exceptional for the Dutch landscape. Established as a national park in 2004, the area serves to protect the geological remnants of the ice age and the delicate biodiversity of its unique ecosystems.
