Aalten is located in the scenic Achterhoek region of Gelderland province, near the German border. The town is best known for its significant role in World War II, when it earned the nickname 'Dorp van Onderduikers' (Village of People in Hiding) due to the exceptionally high number of people it sheltered. This moving history is impressively documented at the National Onderduikmuseum (National Museum of Hiding), which has visitors insights into life during the occupation. Beyond its wartime history, Aalten has a long tradition in the textile industry and clog making, which have shaped the townscape and local culture. The historic centre, with its old buildings and the Oude Helenakerk church, is excellent for a leisurely stroll. The surrounding Achterhoek landscape is characterized by forests, fields, and old farmhouses, making it excellent for cycling and hiking on the extensive network of trails. Getting to Aalten is possible both by car, via the well-developed Dutch and German roads, and by train, as the town has its own station on the line between Arnhem and Winterswijk. The best time to visit is from spring to autumn, when the weather is handy for outdoor activities. Culinarily, visitors should try the regional products of the Achterhoek, which often come directly from the farms.
