Almelo is situated in the heart of the Twente region in the province of Overijssel and features a rich industrial history. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a prominent center for the Dutch textile industry, a legacy still visible in the grand villas of former factory owners and restored industrial buildings. A key landmark is the Almelo Castle (Huis Almelo), which has been in the possession of the Van Rechteren Limpurg family for centuries and adds a historic atmosphere to the city center. Following the decline of textiles, Almelo successfully transitioned into a hub for logistics and high-tech industries, most notably in nuclear technology through the Urenco facility. The city provides a mix of cultural heritage, represented by its city museum, and modern sports culture, being the home of the Heracles Almelo football club. Located along several canals and railway lines, it serves as a central transportation node in the eastern Netherlands, linking regional commerce to national networks.
