Holterberg Summit (Netherlands)

Weather…

The summit of the Holterberg is a central feature within the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park in the province of Overijssel. Standing at an elevation of approximately 59 meters, it provides expansive views over the surrounding heathlands and forests, which were formed as push moraines during the Saale glaciation. The Holterberg is particularly well-known for its Canadian War Cemetery, the final resting place of 1,394 soldiers who died during the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945. Geologically, the hill consists of sand and gravel deposits that were significantly shaped by advancing ice sheets. The vegetation is characterized by vast heathlands, serving as one of the last remaining habitats for the endangered black grouse (Korhoen) in the Netherlands. Near the summit lies the Natuurdiorama Holterberg, one of the oldest natural history museums in the country. The region is a favorite destination for hikers and cyclists who value the serenity and ecological diversity of this protected landscape.
