Wierden is situated in the western part of the Twente region in the province of Overijssel, a municipality with profound roots in agricultural and textile history. Its name is derived from the artificial dwelling mounds (wierden) where early settlers sought refuge from flooding. During the 19th century, Wierden flourished alongside the industrial revolution in the textile sector, which transformed the Twente region into the „Manchester of the Netherlands”. An ecological treasure within the municipality is the „Wierdense Veld”, a protected raised bog area that hosts unique flora and fauna and serves as a rare remnant of the vast marshes that once covered the area. The municipality also encompasses the village of Enter, internationally renowned as the „Wooden Shoe Village”, where the traditional craft of clog-making is still practiced. Today, Wierden is a modern residential community with a strong social fabric, benefiting from excellent regional links via the Deventer, Enschede railway. The historic town hall and the neo-Gothic Sint-Jan de Doperkerk are prominent features of the town center.
