An ecological highlight is the presence of the black grouse, for which the park is one of the last remaining habitats in the Netherlands. Historically, the ridge served as a natural barrier and a strategic lookout point during various military conflicts. Getting there
The peak is usually reached by following the well-marked hiking or mountain biking trails originating from the main Holterberg or Nijverdal access points.
Best season
It gives fantastic vistas on clear days, especially during late summer when the surrounding flora is bustling. Frosty winter mornings provide a strikingly stark landscape.
Terrain & paths
The approach involves a steady but manageable incline over sandy and sometimes loose paths. The glacial sand base makes it a unique geological feature for a hike.
What to bring
Good grip footwear is essential due to the sandy inclines. Pack a windbreaker as the elevated peak can be quite breezy compared to the sheltered forest below.
Parking
Visitors generally leave their cars at the official Sallandse Heuvelrug parking lots. From there, it is an active hike to reach the top of the ridge.
Safety
The loose sand on downhill sections can occasionally cause slips, so watch your footing. Adhere strictly to the path network to avoid disturbing the sensitive ecology.
Time needed
Hiking to the peak and back typically requires around 2 to 3 hours. It is the excellent central objective for a half-day exploration of the national park.
