Nordhorn, the administrative center of the Grafschaft Bentheim district, is located directly on the Dutch border and is often referred to as the "Water City" due to the Vechte River branching into numerous canals throughout the center. This geographical feature heavily influences the townscape, allowing visitors to explore the settlement from the water aboard the traditional "Vechteboote" (Vechte boats). During the 19th and 20th centuries, Nordhorn evolved into one of the most important hubs of the German textile industry; today, the city museum housed in the NINO-Hochbau, a former spinning mill, gives comprehensive insights into this era. In the heart of the town lies the Vechte Island (Vechteinsel), where old factory buildings have been restored and given new public purposes. A popular destination for families is the local zoo, as well as the nearby Vechtesee lake, which invites sailing and pedal boating. The flat surrounding landscape, frequently intersected by waterways, makes the region a prime destination for cyclists. Along hundreds of kilometers of well-marked cycle paths (locally known as "Fietspads"), visitors can seamlessly cross the border into the Netherlands to explore the cross-border region.
