Catembe

Catembe is situated on the southern shore of Maputo Bay, directly opposite the bustling capital. For a long time, the suburb was only accessible by ferry, but since the opening of the impressive Maputo-Katembe suspension bridge, it is firmly connected to the city center. Catembe features a much more relaxed, almost village-like atmosphere and is a popular spot for weekend getaways. The main reason for a visit is the spectacular panoramic view of the Maputo skyline, especially at sunset. The waterfront is lined with restaurants famous for their excellent seafood, particularly grilled calamari and prawns. The local drink 'Catembe' (wine mixed with cola) is also a must-try here. The town also serves as the gateway to the southern national parks and beaches. Although Catembe has become more modern due to the bridge, it still retains its original charm. The beaches are better suited for strolling than for swimming but offer a refreshing breeze. The best time to visit is between May and October when temperatures are pleasant. Catembe gives the first-rate escape from the hustle and bustle of Maputo without truly leaving the city.
