River
Oued Souss is one of the most significant rivers in southern Morocco, flowing through the fertile Souss plain between the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas mountains. It originates in the High Atlas near Jbel Toubkal and empties into the Atlantic Ocean after a journey of about 180 kilometers, just south of Agadir. The river is the lifeblood of the region, as its waters are intensively used for the cultivation of citrus fruits and olives, making the Souss valley a cornerstone of Moroccan agriculture. At its mouth, the river forms a valuable estuary that is part of the Souss-Massa National Park, providing sanctuary to numerous rare bird species. Historically, the Souss valley served as a major trade route and a cultural heartland for the Berber people. Getting there
Access to the Souss plain and the river is typically from the coastal city of Agadir or surrounding regional routes. Numerous smaller tracks lead off the main roads toward the riverbed.
Best season
The months between October and April are the most pleasant for visiting the Souss plain. During the dry summer months, the river often carries significantly less water, and the heat is intense.
Terrain & paths
The plain is characterized by flat, expansive terrain that is sometimes marked by sand and dry scrub. Paths along the riverbanks are mostly dirt, occasionally sandy, and generally unpaved.
What to bring
Comfortable footwear that provides good grip on sandy ground is advisable. Since sun exposure on the plain can be very strong, sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of water are mandatory.
Parking
Vehicles can usually be parked without difficulty in the villages near the river. Along the wider country roads, dusty pull-offs are frequently found for a short stop.
Safety
During warmer months, the heat should not be underestimated; sun protection is extremely important here. In rare but heavy rains, the water level on the plain can rise surprisingly fast.
Time needed
An excursion to explore the river landscape and observe regional wildlife usually takes one to two hours. However, a drive completely across the Souss plain can fill a half-day.
