Imiter Silver Mine

The Imiter silver mine, located in the Djebel Saghro range of the Anti-Atlas mountains, is Morocco's most significant silver deposit and ranks among the largest silver mines in the world. Operated by the Société Métallurgique d'Imiter (SMI), a subsidiary of the Managem Group, the mine is renowned for the exceptional purity of its silver, which often occurs in native form with a fineness exceeding 99.5%. Historical records suggest that mining at this site dates back as far as the 8th century, highlighting the kingdom's long-standing mining tradition. Today, Imiter produces between 200 and 250 tons of silver annually, making a substantial contribution to Morocco's mineral exports. The industrial facility includes modern hydrometallurgical processing plants that enable efficient extraction of the precious metal. Situated in an arid mountainous region, the mine plays a central role in the socio-economic development of local communities. Despite challenges posed by the depth of the deposits and water scarcity, Imiter remains a highly profitable and strategically important asset for the Moroccan mining industry.
