Tinghir is located in east-central Morocco, located between the High Atlas Mountains and the Jbel Saghro range, at the center of one of the country's most spectacular oasis landscapes. The town stretches along the Todra Valley, famous for its extensive palm groves and the world-renowned Todra Gorge. Historically, Tinghir was a strategic junction on caravan routes and served as an administrative center during the French Protectorate to manage the surrounding Berber tribes. The urban landscape is characterized by traditional earthen kasbahs, including the historic Glaoui Kasbah, which overlooks the lush greenery of the oasis. The Todra Gorge, with its limestone canyon walls rising up to 300 meters high, is a major international destination for rock climbers and hikers. Local livelihoods are primarily based on traditional oasis agriculture, producing dates, olives, and almonds, and a thriving tourism industry. The population is predominantly of Berber (Amazigh) origin, maintaining strong cultural traditions in music, language, and carpet weaving, while the town itself has expanded into a modern provincial capital.
