Todra Gorge

Todra Gorge is one of Morocco's most staggering natural wonders. The canyon was carved out by the Todra and Dades rivers through the limestone of the High Atlas Mountains over millennia. At its narrowest point, the gorge is only about 10 meters wide, while the rock walls tower nearly 300 meters vertically above the visitors. The crystal-clear river water flows gently through the bottom, providing a cool sanctuary. For rock climbing enthusiasts, Todra Gorge is a world-class destination with hundreds of bolted routes of varying difficulty. Casual visitors can also enjoy hikes through the surrounding palm groves of Tinghir or explore traditional mud-brick villages. The gorge has been featured in several films and is a favorite for photographers, especially when the sunlight paints the rock faces in deep reds and oranges. There are numerous hotels and guest houses within the gorge and in the nearby town of Tinghir. Local cuisine features traditional tajines and couscous. The gorge is easily accessible by car from the road between Ouarzazate and Erfoud. The best time to visit is during spring or autumn, as the climate is most pleasant for outdoor activities.
