Kasbah Telouet
The Kasbah of Telouet is a monumental ruin located in the High Atlas Mountains, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters along the ancient caravan route to Marrakesh. It served as the ancestral seat of the El Glaoui family, whose leader, Thami El Glaoui, was known as the 'Pasha of Marrakesh' during the French protectorate era. While the fortress's exterior appears heavily weathered and crumbling today, the interior reveals a surprising splendor featuring the finest examples of Moroccan craftsmanship. The walls are decorated with intricate zellij tilework, while the ceilings consist of carved cedar wood and stucco embellished with gold leaf. Following the downfall of the Glaoui family in 1956, the complex was abandoned and left to decay, giving it a melancholic yet fascinating atmosphere today. The Kasbah stands as a testament to the extreme concentration of power and wealth held by local feudal lords in the early 20th century. Despite structural damage, the opulent reception halls continue to draw visitors who marvel at the contrast between the rugged mountain landscape and the luxurious interior.
