Katavi National Park (Tanzania)

Weather…

Katavi National Park is the epitome of Africa's untouched wilderness. Located deep in western Tanzania, this park remains undiscovered by most tourists, making it a dream destination for safari purists. The vast floodplains of Katuma and Katisunga are the setting for massive wildlife gatherings, particularly buffaloes, which appear here in herds numbering several thousands. The most spectacular phenomenon in Katavi occurs at the end of the dry season. When the rivers shrink to a minimum, hundreds of hippos crowd together in the remaining deep pools. Crocodiles also retreat into caves along the riverbanks. This density of big game naturally attracts numerous predators such as lions and leopards hoping for an easy catch. Getting to Katavi is time-consuming and expensive, mostly possible only by chartered light aircraft. The few lodges in the park offer an exclusive atmosphere where you experience the true bush feeling. Meals are often served under the open sky, with a focus on hearty safari cuisine. The absolute best time to visit is the late dry season from August to October. During this phase, wildlife is at its most concentrated and dramatic scenes at the waterholes are guaranteed. During the rainy season, the park is nearly inaccessible as the plains flood and turn into a giant wetland.
