Lovcen National Park is the spiritual heart of Montenegro, representing the country's struggle for independence. The centerpiece is the Njegoš Mausoleum, perched on the Jezerski Vrh peak (1657 m). To reach the monument, visitors must climb 461 stone steps through a mountain tunnel. At the top, a circular viewing platform has a wide-open 360-degree panorama that includes the Bay of Kotor, Lake Skadar, and on very clear days, even the coast of Italy across the Adriatic. Within the park lies the historic village of Njeguši, famous as the birthplace of the Petrović dynasty and renowned for its specialty Njeguški pršut (dry-cured ham) and cheese. The park is a paradise for hikers, with trails winding through diverse karst landscapes and pine forests. The drive from Kotor via the legendary 25 serpentines is a bucket-list experience for many travelers, offering vertical views over the bay. The best time to visit is between May and October, as the high-altitude terrain can remain snow-covered well into spring.
