The Orkhon River, stretching approximately 1,124 kilometers, is the longest river in Mongolia and a major tributary of the Selenge River. It originates in the Hangai Mountains of Arkhangai Province and flows northeastward across the country before meeting the Selenge. The Orkhon Valley holds immense historical significance and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004, having served as the center of nomadic empires for millennia, including the Xiongnu and the Mongols under Genghis Khan. One of the most spectacular natural features along the river is the Ulaan Tsutgalan Waterfall, created by a volcanic eruption about 20,000 years ago, plunging over a 20-meter cliff. The river is home to various fish species like pike and taimen and is a critical water source for agriculture and livestock in central Mongolia. Historical ruins such as Karakorum, the former capital of the Mongol Empire, are located near its banks.
