Khorgo Volcano is an extinct volcanic cone located in the Arkhangai Province of central Mongolia. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,210 meters above sea level, it is a centerpiece of the Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park. The volcano's last eruption occurred roughly 8,000 years ago, creating an expansive lava field often referred to as a 'sea of basalt.' The crater itself measures about 200 meters in diameter and has a depth of approximately 100 meters. Visitors can hike to the rim of the volcano to peer into the crater and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic terrain and the nearby Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur lake. The area features numerous lava caves and unique rock structures formed by the rapid cooling of flowing lava. The local landscape is dotted with Siberian larch forests that thrive on the nutrient-rich volcanic soil. Khorgo is recognized as one of Mongolia's most pristine and geologically significant volcanic landmarks.

Visiting
Khorgo Volcano is an extinct volcano in Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur National Park and is freely accessible. You can hike to the crater rim and descend into the crater.
Typical hours
As an outdoor landmark within the national park, there are no fixed opening hours. Park access is typically from sunrise to sunset.

Photography is allowed throughout the volcano area. Particularly impressive are shots of the crater from above and the surrounding lava fields.
Time needed
Allow about two to three hours for the hike to the crater and exploring the lava fields. Additionally, factor in travel time within the park.
Combine with
Combine with a visit to nearby Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur (White Lake), just a few kilometers away. Boat trips and birdwatching round out the stay.
Getting there
The volcano is accessible by car from Tsetserleg town via a gravel road. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, especially after rainfall.
