Khöshöö Tsaidam Monuments (Mongolia)

Weather…

The Khöshöö Tsaidam Monuments, located in the Orkhon Valley, are extraordinary historical remnants of the Second Turkic Khaganate dating back to the 8th century. The site primarily features two monumental stelae dedicated to Bilge Khan and his brother, Kul Tigin. These stone pillars are of immense linguistic and historical significance as they bear the oldest known inscriptions in Old Turkic runic script. The texts provide a detailed account of the military achievements, political philosophy, and social structure of the early Turkic peoples. Discovered in the late 19th century by Russian archaeologist Nikolai Yadrintsev, the monuments were later relocated to a modern onsite museum to prevent further erosion from the elements. Replicas now stand at the original excavation sites. As a key component of the Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape UNESCO World Heritage site, Khöshöö Tsaidam remains a vital cultural symbol for Turkic nations worldwide.
