Arvaikheer is the capital of Övörkhangai Province, sitting at 1,913 metres above sea level on the open Mongolian steppe and serving as the provincial seat since 1942. Its name means barley-coloured horse, a reference to a legendary local racehorse. About 26,000 people live here, 430 kilometres southwest of Ulaanbaatar, and the town acts as an important gateway to the historic Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. Some 138 kilometres to the northwest lie the ruins of Karakorum, capital of the Mongol Empire built in 1235 under Ögedei Khan, together with the famous Erdene Zuu Monastery, founded in 1585 and considered Mongolia's oldest surviving Buddhist monastery. Arvaikheer is renowned for its horse breeding and for its July Naadam festival, which features horse racing, wrestling and archery. A paved road has linked the town directly with the capital since 2014. The surrounding landscape is dotted with small steppe lakes and rolling pastures.
