Tövkhön Monastery was established in 1648 by Zanabazar, the first Bogd Gegeen of Mongolia, atop the Shireet Ulaan mountain at an elevation of 2,300 meters. The complex served as a retreat for meditation, scientific research, and artistic creation for the prominent spiritual leader for over 30 years. The monastery's structures are harmoniously integrated into the rocky terrain, overlooking the Orkhon Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In 1686, Zanabazar developed the Soyombo script here, which remains a central national symbol of Mongolia to this day. During the religious purges of 1937, the monastery was almost completely destroyed, with reconstruction efforts beginning only after the democratic revolution in 1992. Today, it functions again as an active monastery and a major pilgrimage site, celebrated for its unique blend of natural beauty and sacred Buddhist architecture.

Visiting
Tövkhön Monastery is accessible; the restored temples on the rock can be visited. The climb to the monastery rewards you with a magnificent panorama over the surrounding forests and mountains.

The monastery is typically open from sunrise to sunset, with no fixed closing time. It is best visited early in the morning when the silence is most profound.

Photography is allowed across the entire rock plateau; the views offer excellent subjects. Please refrain from drones, as the area is considered sacred and would disturb the monks' peace.
Time needed
Allow about two hours for the climb and temple visit. If you wish to explore the entire mountain area, you can easily spend half a day or more on site.

The monastery is located in Khustai National Park, famous for its wild horses (takhi). Combine the visit with a safari to observe Przewalski's horses in the nearby steppe.
Getting there
The monastery is only reachable via an unpaved road, requiring an off-road vehicle. From Ulaanbaatar, drive about 1.5 hours to the park entrance, then a hike or 4x4 ride.
Insider tip
Pack a picnic and enjoy the view from the rock top - there are no dining facilities on site. Wear sturdy footwear as the climb is steep and slippery in places.
