Tsetserleg, whose name means garden in Mongolian, is widely regarded as one of the greenest and most attractive provincial capitals in the country. The town stands at 1,691 metres above sea level on the southern slope of the Khangai Mountains and has served as the capital of Arkhangai Province since 1923, with a population of around 21,000. Above the town rises the sacred Bulgan Mountain, at whose foot stands the Zayain Monastery, founded in 1586. It now houses the Arkhangai provincial museum with more than 5,000 exhibits documenting local history, ethnography and Buddhist culture. The monastery survived the Stalinist purges of the 1930s because it was repurposed as a warehouse. About 28 kilometres west lie the famous Tsenkher hot springs, where the water can reach 86 degrees and is used for therapeutic bathing. Nearby attractions include the Tariat volcano and the Khorgo crater lake. The settlement was originally founded in 1631 around a monastery and gradually modernised through the twentieth century.
