Salkhit Wind Farm (Mongolia)

Weather…

The Salkhit Wind Farm is Mongolia's first commercial-scale wind power project, representing a significant milestone in the country's transition toward renewable energy. Located in the Sergelen district of Tuv Province, approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Ulaanbaatar, the farm was commissioned in June 2013. It features 31 wind turbines provided by General Electric, delivering a total installed capacity of 50 megawatts. Developed by Newcom LLC in partnership with international investors like the EBRD, the project showcases the potential of Mongolia's vast wind resources. Annually, Salkhit produces about 168 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy, enough to power 100,000 households. The wind farm helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 180,000 tons per year and saves significant amounts of water and coal that would otherwise be consumed by traditional thermal power plants.

📋 Practical info

🏭
What is this place?
Representing a monumental step towards sustainable infrastructure, this facility is recognized as Mongolia's first large-scale wind farm. It significantly diversifies the national energy grid by harnessing the abundant natural winds of the open steppe.
🚪
Visiting
Access to the immediate base of the wind turbines and the operational facilities is generally restricted to personnel for safety and security reasons. However, the expansive nature of the site means travellers can easily view the imposing structures from surrounding public roads.
👀
Where to view it
The giant turbines are highly visible across the rolling hills and can be seen clearly from the main highways passing near the area. Stopping safely by the roadside provides an excellent opportunity to photograph the contrast between modern technology and untouched nature.
🧺
Local products
In this relatively remote pastoral region, local products are strongly tied to traditional nomadic livestock rearing. Visitors travelling through might encounter local herders offering fresh dairy products, airag, or traditional handmade felt items.
📆
Active season
The turbines actively generate power year-round, visibly turning whenever the steppe winds pick up. Summer is by far the most comfortable season for travelling through the region, as the harsh Mongolian winters make road access challenging.
Nearby
Viewing the wind farm integrates perfectly into a broader road trip exploring the vast landscapes and national parks outside the capital. Travellers often continue their journey towards scenic reserves or ancient monastery ruins dotted across the countryside.
