- Visit the Töv Province Museum to learn about the rich nomadic heritage of this central Mongolian region.
- When hiking in the Bogd Khan Uul protected area, stay on the trails as it is a sacred and strictly protected site.
- Taxis from Ulaanbaatar to Züünmod are affordable, but always agree on the price before starting the trip.
🍽 Food
Töv province is famous for excellent yogurt (Tarag) and curds; buy them fresh from nomads selling along the road.
In the small eateries in the center, this fried noodle dish is often made with exceptionally fresh beef.
Look for the heavy, round Mongolian bread at the local bakery, great for dipping in milk tea.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
In Züünmod, you can find small shops selling high-quality felt slippers and bags, often cheaper than in Ulaanbaatar.
A great place to find authentic riding gear and handmade Mongolian saddles produced in the region.
The paths starting right behind the town lead into the woods, offering total silence and fresh mountain air.
The area around the monastery museum is a very peaceful spot for reflection and rest.

Zuunmod, whose name means a hundred trees, sits at 1,529 metres above sea level just 43 kilometres south of Ulaanbaatar on the southern flank of the sacred Bogd Khan Uul. Since 1942 it has been the capital of Töv Province, with around 17,000 residents, and is reached from the capital via a paved mountain road. About 5 kilometres west lies the Manzushir Monastery, founded in 1733, which once supported more than 20 temples and 300 monks but was utterly destroyed during the Stalinist purges of 1937. A single restored temple and a small museum now stand among the ruins. Bogd Khan Uul (2,257 m) has been protected since 1778, making it the world's oldest officially designated nature reserve, and shelters red deer, wolves and stone martens. Zuunmod is also a centre of agricultural research, hosting Mongolia's national experimental station for wheat and vegetable cultivation. The surrounding meadows burst into flower every summer.
