Manzushir Monastery was established in 1733 on the southern slopes of Bogd Khan Mountain and was once one of the largest and most significant religious sites in Mongolia. At its zenith, the complex consisted of over 20 temples and provided a residence for more than 300 monks. Dedicated to Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, it served as a major center for Buddhist philosophy and spiritual practice. In 1937, the monastery was completely destroyed during the Stalinist anti-religious purges, and its monks were either imprisoned or executed. Currently, only the skeletal ruins of the former structures remain, though a small portion of the main temple has been restored as a museum. This museum displays religious artifacts, historical photographs of the original site, and remarkable 18th-century rock carvings of Buddhist deities found in the vicinity. The monastery's pretty location in a forested valley makes it a favored destination for both hikers and history enthusiasts.

Visiting
The atmospheric monastery ruins are openly accessible to visitors who hike into the scenic valleys of the Bogd Khan Uul mountains. You can explore the remaining stone walls, restored structures, and ancient Buddhist rock carvings scattered throughout the forested hills.

The site is located within a national park, which generally welcomes visitors from early morning until sunset. The small on-site museum typically operates during standard daytime hours, but may have irregular schedules outside the peak summer tourist season.

The combination of crumbling historic ruins and the lush, forested mountain backdrop makes this an exceptionally photogenic location. The large Buddhist deities carved directly into the surrounding cliff faces are particularly striking subjects for close-up shots.
Time needed
A typical visit requires at least two to three hours to hike up to the ruins, explore the site, and view the rock carvings. If you plan to hike further to the Tsetsee Gun peak, you will need to allocate a full day for the entire mountain excursion.

Getting there
The ruins are situated just south of Ulaanbaatar, near the town of Zuunmod, reachable by a short drive on a paved road. From the designated parking area or the town itself, reaching the main monastery ruins requires a moderate uphill hike along well-trodden paths.
Insider tip
Be sure to wear comfortable, sturdy hiking boots, as the trails leading up to and around the ruins can be steep and rocky. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as deer and various bird species, which are frequently spotted in this protected mountain environment.
