Water temperature…
Nalaikh has been one of the nine urban districts of Ulaanbaatar since 1992, sitting at 1,300 metres above sea level about 35 kilometres southeast of the capital's centre. The district is home to roughly 33,000 people and was, from 1922 onwards, the main coal supply for Ulaanbaatar and indeed its sole source of coal until the 1990s. In 1990 a state-mine shaft collapsed, killing 21 miners, and the mine was closed. Since then thousands of residents have engaged in dangerous illegal small-scale mining (the so-called ninjas), digging vertical shafts without safety standards, and 30 to 50 people die in accidents each year. The local economy rests heavily on this perilous grey economy. About 5 kilometres away stands the 40-metre-tall equestrian statue of Genghis Khan, unveiled in 2008 and the largest equestrian statue in the world. Nalaikh has a significant Kazakh minority of roughly 17 percent, with its own mosques and cultural associations.
