The Cimislia Hills are located in south-central Moldova, forming part of the Southern Moldavian Hills. This relief is characterized by its high fragmentation and the presence of numerous erosion forms such as ravines and gullies, shaped by the Cogalnic River basin. Geologically, loose Tertiary sediments like sands and clays dominate, eroding easily under the influence of heavy rainfall. The hill ridges reach heights of about 200 to 250 meters and offer an undulating topography used for viticulture and sheep farming. Climatically, the region belongs to the drier zones of Moldova, favoring the development of typical steppe flora. Historically, Cimislia was an important trade hub connecting the central areas with the Budjak. The landscape today is a mosaic of pastures, vineyards, and wide grain fields, with soil erosion posing a constant challenge to local agriculture.

Getting there

Traveling to the hilly zone around Cimișlia is primarily done via the national connecting roads in the southern part of the country. From the town of the same name, numerous secondary roads and unpaved dirt tracks provide access to the open, erosion-marked landscape.

A visit is particularly rewarding in spring or early autumn when the climatic conditions are moderate and more comfortable. After heavy rainfall, the loess soils can become exceptionally sticky, making unpaved paths difficult to traverse for both vehicles and hikers.

Terrain & paths

The region is characterized by broad hills and distinctive landslides or deeply incised erosion gullies formed in the loess soil. Hiking generally requires walking on uneven and often soft ground, as there is virtually no paved or formal hiking infrastructure available.

What to bring

Sturdy, ankle-high footwear helps in finding a secure grip on the soft and sometimes unexpectedly slippery slopes. Because the area can be intensely hot during the summer months, plenty of water, a hat, and good sunscreen are essential items for any visitor's backpack.

Parking

Parking is informal and mostly takes place along the edges of agricultural tracks or near local farmsteads. However, one should be extremely careful to avoid parking on the soft loess soil immediately after rain to prevent the vehicle from becoming inadvertently stuck.

Special caution is advised near the unsecured edges of drops and within the deep erosion ravines, as the loess soil can easily give way. Long hikes during the summer should be well-planned due to the intense heat and ideally avoided during the peak midday hours.

To explore the striking geological formations and the surrounding hills, visitors should generally plan for about two to four hours. Those wishing to discover the broader surroundings on foot can easily spend half a day to a full day navigating this expansive landscape.
