The Cogîlnic is a significant river flowing through southern Moldova and southwestern Ukraine. It originates in the central Moldovan hills, southwest of Chișinău, and flows southward across the distinctive landscapes of the Budjak steppe. With a total length of approximately 243 kilometers, it is one of the primary rivers draining the southern regions. The Cogîlnic eventually empties into the Sasyk Lagoon (Liman) on the Black Sea coast. Historically, the river served as a vital resource for the diverse groups inhabiting the steppe region, including Tatars and 19th-century German colonists. The river's hydrological regime is marked by significant fluctuations, often partially drying up in its upper reaches during arid summer months. The surrounding landscape is dominated by agriculture, yet the river valley sustains essential wetlands that support local steppe biodiversity. The Cogîlnic remains a central feature in the physical and economic geography of the Budjak region.

Access to the riverbanks is possible in many places via rural secondary roads and unpaved dirt tracks in southern Moldova. The flat steppe landscapes are generally best reached by starting from the agricultural villages that dot the river valley.

Spring is often the best time for observations, as the river typically carries more water and the surrounding steppe is lush and green. During the height of summer, the region can become very dry and hot, frequently causing the river's water level to drop significantly.
