Cogâlnic Plain (Moldova)

Weather…

The Cogâlnic Plain extends across southern Moldova and is an integral part of the South Moldavian Hilly Plain. The relief is predominantly flat to gently undulating, sloping gradually from north to south toward the Black Sea. The plain is traversed by the Cogâlnic River and its tributaries, which often experience low water levels during the summer months. Geologically, the region is characterized by thick loess deposits, upon which the highly fertile chernozem soils of the Bugeac Steppe have developed. Due to the semi-arid climate, the natural vegetation consists of dry steppe, though most of it has been converted into agricultural land for grain and sunflower cultivation. The plain is sparse in natural forests but features an extensive system of man-made shelterbelts. In the valleys, numerous salt flats and small saline lakes can be found, reflecting the region's marine geological past. The Cogâlnic Plain is of great economic importance for Moldova's agricultural sector.
