Old Tighina Fortress (Moldova)

Weather…

The Tighina Fortress, also known as Bender Fortress, is one of the most significant medieval defensive structures in Moldova, situated on the right bank of the Dniester River. The stone fortification was constructed in 1538 by order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, following the Ottoman occupation of the area. It was designed under the supervision of the renowned architect Mimar Sinan, replacing an earlier Moldavian wooden fort. The fortress served as a vital strategic outpost for the Ottoman Empire, featuring thick walls and multiple bastions that were later upgraded with Vauban-style fortifications. Throughout the centuries, it was a focal point in several Russo-Turkish wars and changed hands multiple times. Today, the restored complex serves as a major historical site, showcasing a blend of Ottoman military engineering and local administrative history.
