Bender Fortress (Moldova)

Weather…

Bender Fortress, also known as Tighina Fortress, is one of the most powerful historical fortifications on the Dniester River. It was constructed in the 16th century following the conquest of the region by the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The fortress was designed by the famous Ottoman architect Sinan, following the model of Western European bastion systems, and served as a primary strategic base against Moldovan and Russian forces. The complex covers an area of approximately 20 hectares and consists of a main citadel with 10 towers and an extensive defensive moat system. Throughout the centuries, it was the site of numerous battles between the Russian and Ottoman Empires. It is also famously known as the refuge of King Charles XII of Sweden after his defeat at Poltava in 1709. Today, the fortress is open to visitors, housing museums dedicated to military history and medieval torture instruments. Despite its turbulent past, the structure is remarkably well-preserved and represents a masterpiece of fortification engineering.
