Tampolo Nature Reserve (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Tampolo Nature Reserve on the east coast of the Masoala Peninsula is an exceptional example of the intersection between primary coastal forest and marine ecosystems. Geographically, it is located on the shores of the Indian Ocean and is part of the Masoala National Park, Madagascar's largest protected area. The park is unique in that the dense rainforest extends directly to the white sandy beaches and coral reefs. Historically, the area was placed under protection in 1997 to preserve one of the last intact forest areas of its kind. The reserve is home to rare species such as the red ruffed lemur and the helmet vanga, a striking bird with a blue beak. The waters off Tampolo also host a marine reserve that serves as a vital nursing ground for humpback whales between July and September. The region's inaccessibility, mostly reachable only by boat, ensures the preservation of this ecologically sensitive zone for future research.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time for lemur watching in Tampolo Nature Reserve is the cool dry season from May to October. During these months animals are more active and the dense canopy is less impenetrable.
🌅
Best time of day
Lemurs are crepuscular and are easiest to spot early in the morning and late afternoon. At these times they forage for fruits and leaves in the treetops.
📜
Etiquette
Keep at least 10 meters from lemurs and do not feed them, as it endangers their health. Stay on designated paths to avoid trampling the undergrowth.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are essential to spot shy lemurs high in the trees. Sturdy waterproof footwear is recommended as trails can be muddy during the rainy season.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is near the town of Fénérive-Est and is typically reached by 4x4 vehicle on dirt roads. Local guides can be hired on site and know the best viewing spots.
🦌
What to expect
Lemurs are not always immediately visible; look for movement in the treetops and listen for their calls. Stay still in one spot as the animals may lose their shyness after a while.
