Mananara Avaratra, commonly known as Mananara Nord, is a coastal town located in the Analanjirofo region of northeastern Madagascar. Situated at the mouth of the Mananara River where it meets the Indian Ocean, the town is the gateway to one of the island's most ecologically significant areas. It is home to the Mananara Nord National Park, which in 1990 became Madagascar's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, encompassing both dense rainforests and coral reefs. The local economy thrives on the production of export crops such as cloves, vanilla, and coffee, making it a key player in the "Clove Coast" economy. Geographically, the region is characterized by its rugged terrain and coastal lowlands, which have historically limited overland access and helped preserve its natural state. The town's history is deeply intertwined with maritime trade along the eastern seaboard and the traditions of the Betsimisaraka people. Despite its remote location, Mananara Avaratra is a center for biodiversity conservation and features a unique glimpse into the traditional Malagasy way of life.
