Port of Toamasina (Madagascar)

Weather…

The Port of Toamasina, also known as the Grand Port de l'Est, is Madagascar's vital economic gateway and the country's largest maritime port. It handles approximately 75 percent of the national cargo volume and nearly 90 percent of all container traffic. Strategically located on the east coast along the Indian Ocean, the port serves as the primary export point for Malagasy products such as vanilla, cloves, and minerals from the Ambatovy mine. The port's history dates back to the 19th century when it was developed into a central trading hub under the Merina Kingdom. In recent years, the port has undergone massive modernization and expansion projects with significant support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). These upgrades aim to increase container handling capacity and accommodate larger deep-draft vessels. Despite being prone to seasonal cyclones, Toamasina remains the indispensable logistical backbone of the island nation.
