Schoenfels Old Tower (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Old Tower of Schoenfels is the most prominent surviving feature of the medieval castle complex in the Valley of the Seven Castles. This massive rectangular donjon was erected in the 13th century, likely around 1292, by Ferri of Schoenfels, serving as both a fortified residence and a potent symbol of manorial authority. Constructed with thick walls of local sandstone and topped with characteristic battlements, the tower is an outstanding example of the feudal architecture favored by the Luxembourgish nobility. Despite numerous conflicts and changes in ownership over the centuries, the tower has remained largely in its original form, while other parts of the fortress were eventually replaced by more modern chateau structures. The interior houses vaulted chambers that were once used for defense and storage. Its strategic position overlooking the Eisch River allowed for effective control of valley access. Today, the tower is part of a state-protected heritage site, hosting cultural exhibitions and housing forestry administration offices while its historic facade is meticulously preserved.
