Bomi Hills (Liberia)

Weather…

The Bomi Hills represent a significant geographical and economic landmark in northwestern Liberia. Rising above the surrounding coastal plains about 60 kilometers from the capital, Monrovia, these hills are characterized by a gentle, undulating topography covered in tropical greenery. The region gained international prominence in the mid-20th century following the discovery of massive high-grade iron ore deposits, leading to the establishment of Liberia's first major mining operations. For decades, the Bomi Hills were the backbone of the nation's economy, as evidenced by the deep open-pit mines that have now partially filled with water, creating striking blue lakes amidst the verdant landscape. While the peak of large-scale mining has passed, the hills remain an area of great interest for their geological formations and natural beauty. Visitors to the region can explore the legacy of the mining era, witness the resilience of nature as it reclaims the industrial sites, and enjoy the cooler air and panoramic views afforded by the regional elevation.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
These gentle hills are located northwest of Monrovia, accessible via main regional roads leading toward Tubmanburg. A sturdy 4x4 vehicle is still advised for safely traversing the final unpaved and potentially rocky sections.
📅
Best season
Visiting between December and April provides the clearest panoramic views and safest driving conditions before the monsoon begins. Heavy rains from May onwards make the surrounding dirt roads very difficult to navigate easily.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape features moderate inclines, grassy areas, and fascinating remnants of old, abandoned iron ore mining operations. Hikers will encounter a mix of dirt tracks and rocky patches requiring careful, deliberate footing.
🎒
What to bring
Wear rugged hiking shoes suitable for rocky or uneven ground, and bring a wide-brimmed hat along with strong sun protection. Carrying your own snacks and a very sufficient supply of drinking water is absolutely crucial here.
🅿️
Parking
You can usually find space to park near the base of the hills or in adjacent local settlements where open space permits. Make sure your parked vehicle is not blocking local traffic or narrow agricultural pathways for residents.
⚠️
Safety
Exercise extreme caution around any abandoned mining pits or unstable rocky ledges left over from historical industrial activity. Keep a respectful distance from any deep water accumulations in former, unmaintained quarries.
⏱️
Time needed
Exploring the rolling landscape and observing the historical mining remnants will generally take about two to four hours of walking. Most visitors spend a leisurely half-day hiking the gentle slopes and taking landscape photos.
