Getting there

These gentle hills are located northwest of Monrovia, accessible via main regional roads leading toward Tubmanburg. A sturdy 4x4 vehicle is still advised for safely traversing the final unpaved and potentially rocky sections.

Best season

Visiting between December and April provides the clearest panoramic views and safest driving conditions before the monsoon begins. Heavy rains from May onwards make the surrounding dirt roads very difficult to navigate easily.

Terrain & paths

The landscape features moderate inclines, grassy areas, and fascinating remnants of old, abandoned iron ore mining operations. Hikers will encounter a mix of dirt tracks and rocky patches requiring careful, deliberate footing.

What to bring

Wear rugged hiking shoes suitable for rocky or uneven ground, and bring a wide-brimmed hat along with strong sun protection. Carrying your own snacks and a very sufficient supply of drinking water is absolutely crucial here.

You can usually find space to park near the base of the hills or in adjacent local settlements where open space permits. Make sure your parked vehicle is not blocking local traffic or narrow agricultural pathways for residents.

Exercise extreme caution around any abandoned mining pits or unstable rocky ledges left over from historical industrial activity. Keep a respectful distance from any deep water accumulations in former, unmaintained quarries.
