For decades, the mine was a cornerstone of the national economy, specializing in the extraction and processing of high-grade iron ore. The development of the mine led to the creation of Bong Town, a self-contained community with schools, hospitals, and specialized infrastructure. A dedicated 80-kilometer railway was built to transport the ore directly to the Free Port of Monrovia for export. Although production was severely interrupted during the Liberian civil wars, the site remains a symbol of the country's industrial potential. Today, the remnants of the massive open-pit operations and processing facilities stand as a testament to Liberia's mining heritage and its complex relationship with global resource extraction.
