Mokhotlong Residency
The Mokhotlong Residency is one of the most significant historical structures in the eastern highlands of Lesotho. Built in the early 20th century, it served as the administrative headquarters and living quarters for British officials in Basutoland. At that time, Mokhotlong was regarded as one of the most remote outposts of the British Empire, often reachable only after days of traveling on horseback or arduous treks over steep mountain passes. The building itself is notable for its robust construction using local stone, designed to withstand the extreme weather conditions of the high-altitude region. Its architecture reflects the colonial style of the era and stands as a testament to the administrative efforts to maintain authority in the furthest reaches of the territory. Today, the Residency is a compelling stop for travelers interested in Lesotho's colonial history. It provides a window into the challenges of governing such a rugged terrain and the reality of life in isolation. The surrounding landscape, with its majestic peaks, adds a memorable backdrop to this historic site.
