Rachaya Citadel (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Rachaya Citadel (Citadel of Independence) is located on the slopes of Mount Hermon and is the most important site in the history of modern Lebanon. The fortress, originally built by Crusaders in the 11th century, was expanded by the Shihab and Maan dynasties and later served as an Ottoman and French garrison. It gained its outstanding historical significance in November 1943. After French mandate authorities arrested the first Lebanese president, Bechara El Khoury, Prime Minister Riad El Solh, and other national leaders, they were held prisoner in this citadel. The imprisonment sparked nationwide strikes and international pressure, ultimately leading to the leaders' release on November 22; this day is now celebrated as Lebanon's official Independence Day. Within the thick stone walls of the complex, a museum now displays the cells where the leaders were held, paying tribute to the achievement of the country's sovereignty.
