Venta Rapid (Latvia)

Weather…

The Venta Rapid (Ventas rumba) in Kuldīga is the widest waterfall in Europe, stretching up to 249 meters during high water periods. While its height is relatively modest, ranging between 1.8 and 2 meters, it is a significant natural monument formed on a Devonian limestone ledge. The waterfall is famous for a unique biological phenomenon: every spring and autumn, fish such as the Vimba swim upstream and attempt to jump over the rapid to reach their spawning grounds. In the 17th century, Duke Jacob of Courland developed a specialized method involving wicker baskets suspended over the falls to catch these jumping fish mid-air, leading to Kuldīga's nickname as the town where 'fish fly through the air.' Adjacent to the falls is the historic red brick bridge built in 1874, which is one of the longest brick bridges in Europe and provides an excellent vantage point for spectators. The site is a key part of the Venta Valley Nature Reserve and a popular destination for nature photography and swimming.
