Nativity of Christ Cathedral (Latvia)

Weather…

The Nativity of Christ Cathedral in Riga is the largest Orthodox cathedral in Latvia and a prime example of Neo-Byzantine architecture in the Baltic region. It was built between 1876 and 1883 according to designs by architect Robert Pflug, with the bells donated by Russian Tsar Alexander II. During the first period of Latvian independence, it served as a spiritual hub, but following the Soviet occupation in 1961, it was converted into a planetarium and a cinema known as the 'Republic House of Knowledge'. During this time, its religious artifacts were removed and frescoes painted over. After Latvia regained independence in 1991, the cathedral underwent extensive restoration to return it to its original liturgical purpose and splendor. Its five gilded domes are a prominent feature of the city skyline adjacent to Esplanade Park. Currently, it serves as the seat of the Latvian Orthodox Church, attracting many visitors with its beautifully reconstructed interior and bustling religious community.
