Sepon, in Lao Xepon, is a district town in Savannakhet Province in the southern central part of Laos, not far from the Vietnamese border and the former demilitarised zone. During the Vietnam War the area lay on a key section of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and saw heavy fighting and massive bombing, especially during the South Vietnamese Operation Lam Son 719 in 1971. The consequences are still felt: the surrounding landscape is among the most heavily contaminated by unexploded ordnance and cluster munitions in the world, and clearance organisations such as UXO Lao and MAG are constantly at work. Economically Sepon has gained prominence in recent decades through the Sepon mine, a major gold and copper operation that has shaped local employment and revenue.
