That Ing Hang (Laos)

Weather…

That Ing Hang is one of the most sacred stupas in central Laos, located about 15 kilometers northeast of Savannakhet. Originally built in the 16th century, the stupa was established to house a Buddha relic that, according to legend, was left at this exact location. The structure features a square base and stands approximately nine meters tall, adorned with delicate carvings and sculptures that exhibit both Buddhist and Hindu influences. In 1896, the stupa underwent restoration by the Siamese and was later further maintained during the French colonial period. Every year, during the full moon of the first lunar month, a major festival is held here, drawing pilgrims from across Laos and Thailand. The grounds are enclosed by a wall housing numerous Buddha statues, making it a focal point for spiritual life in the region. Strict adherence to tradition is required, with women being asked to wear traditional Lao skirts (Sinh) when entering the sacred compound.
