💡 Tips
- Visit the Vat Phou temple early in the morning to beat the fierce midday heat and the tour buses from Pakse.
- Rent a bicycle; the town stretches out along the Mekong River and is best explored on two wheels.
- Carry small-denomination Kip notes, as ATMs are scarce and small shops struggle to provide change for large bills.
- Embrace the slow pace. Service at local eateries can be leisurely, so don't rush.
🍽 Food
Order fresh fish grilled in banana leaves at the wooden restaurants perched right on the riverbank.
The traditional Lao minced meat salad with mint and lime. Ask for it mild at small local eateries if you don't like spicy food.
Grab a Lao-style sandwich for breakfast from the small street stalls scattered along the main road.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy hand-woven silk or cotton fabrics directly from the small weaving looms often set up under locals' traditional houses.
Visit the small local market early in the day for fresh tropical fruits and sticky rice snacks.
Find a shaded spot by the river in the late afternoon to watch the spectacular sunset over the water.
Visit this ancient and highly peaceful Buddhist temple that sits well away from the main tourist paths.

Champasak is a historic town in southern Laos, located on the west bank of the Mekong River. It was once the capital of the independent Kingdom of Champasak before being integrated into modern Laos. The town is most famous as the gateway to the Vat Phou temple complex, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001. Vat Phou is a ruined Khmer temple complex with origins dating back as far as the 5th century, predating many of the structures at Angkor Wat. The town itself consists of a long, peaceful street lined with old French colonial buildings and traditional Lao houses, offering a glimpse into its aristocratic past. Historically, the area was a significant spiritual and political link between the Khmer Empire and the upper Mekong valley. Located about 40 kilometers south of Pakse, Champasak remains a serene alternative for travelers interested in archaeology and traditional river life. The surrounding floodplains are extensively used for rice cultivation, supported by the annual cycles of the Mekong River.
